Senator Lou Raptakis

In 1992, Lou was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served for two terms, establishing himself as a champion of good government. As a freshman legislator, he took on the House leadership, blowing the whistle on a taxpayer funded incentive bonus scheme that was benefiting well connected court clerks. At the same time, Lou fought for reforms to the state pension system to reduce expenses to taxpayers and bring a degree of stability and fairness to the system.

Senate passes Raptakis murder/parole bill 2/27/2014

STATE HOUSE – The Rhode Island Senate today approved legislation that will require individuals convicted of first- or second-degree murder to serve as least 50 percent of a sentence prior to being eligible for parole.


the legislation, 2014-S 2029, will apply the 50 percent sentence requirement to individuals convicted of first- or second-degree murder who have not been sentenced to life in prison. More info

Won passage of the "Barbara Lombardi Bill" to close a loophole in the state law intended to protect victims of domestic violence.Crafted the state's tough anti-carjacking law. Led the fight to increase the time murderers must serve before being eligible for parole

 

Protecting Seniors

Fought for the expansion of RI Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Elderly (RIPAE) and called for an increase in the Medicare reimbursement for seniors who are HMO subscribers. Advocated pharmacy freedom of choice bill to reduce cost of prescriptions.

 

Advancing Government Reform

Co-sponsored and voted for Separation of Powers legislation. Co-sponsored and voted for Voter Initiative.

 

Promoting Economic Security

Fought against special interest deals in the state budget, including the increase in revenue for kennel owners at Lincoln Park. Promoted a sensible Minimum Wage Bill to tie increases in the minimum wage to the Consumer Price Index, giving workers steady increases year-to-year and allowing businesses to plan for gradual hikes.
